A new year means new beginnings. Or really, it’s a renewed spark to get things moving in my life again. I want to spend this year further exploring traditional painting, while also putting myself further out there. I plan to take more time to think about what I’m creating versus turning my brain off and letting the pen and paper fly. Titling this painting “Rebirth” felt fitting for my first painting of the new year because I truly feel as if I’m going through my own personal rebirth of sorts.

If you’re an Astrology/Numerology fan (and even if you’re not - just hear me out haha), the year 2025 is a universal number 9 year (2+0+2+5 = 9). Number 9 years are a time of transformation, embracing the end of one cycle and preparing yourself for a new beginning. This probably doesn’t mean much to those of you who aren’t down with the numbers so let me say it this way:

​This year I’m moving differently. More intentional, more mindful, more demure— okay maybe not demure but still. 

In my new painting “Rebirth”, I chose to paint spider lilies because while they often represent death, they’re also a symbol of rebirth and reincarnation. Also if you’re an anime fan like I am, then you know that when these flowers pop up, the anime is going to change you forever. It’s a warning that our faves may not make it through the season let alone the series finale. 

​But I digress. 

This painting will be up in my store eventually, but for now its home is in the Proctor-Yongue House for the duration of this month. It’s a part of the Art of Feeling Exhibition which is coordinated by the Black Creatives of Pitt County Artist Collective for their annual Black History Month Exhibition. If you can, I’d be honored if you went and saw it in person.
